Pillows anyone?

OK ... not the best photo in the world, the but concept was worth a less than stellar photo.  I was in JoAnns this week to purchase some solids and while waiting to get fabric cut, I saw that they were clearing out some of the decorating fabric samples.

The samples were being offered for $2 each ... yup ... $2 each!  They measure just under 18" square and will make perfect cushion covers.  So if you're looking to update some cushions ... not a bad concept.

As I had mentioned before, my younger brother is starting out on his own again and for his birthday (late April) I am making him a queen size quilt (better get started on that soon huh!?!?!).  I've struggled because he won't tell me colors and I have been unwilling to commit.

But this week, he sent me new photos from his apartment in Hawaii ... yup, he's renting a 42nd floor condo on Waikiki.  When I saw all the fabric samples at JoAnns, I instinctively went to the ones that show the colors that represent what he sees out his window ... palm trees, sand and water.

I have decided to make him a version of Denyse Schmidt's "What a Bunch of Squares".  Today, I ordered some 1/8 yard Kona samples from the Fabric Shack in colors that are complimentary to these (can I say how much I love the fact that they do that ... sell in really small quantities -- Thanks Kati for letting me know).  By the end of next week, I should have made my decisions and gotten started on the new quilt.  I figure the cushions can either be tossed on his bed or his LR sofa as it appears that his color theme is tan ... everything is tan ;-).

I also had an interesting garden week ... my trip to the Basque region of Spain (amazing, amazing, amazing) got me interested in the kitchen again ... and that starts with some fresh foods from the garden.  So to prep our little garden bed for some snap peas, I took a pitchfork to it and found these!
5 pounds of carrots and parsnips
I also found a fabulous recipe in this month's Sunset Magazine for Carrot Soup with Pesto.
Carrot Soup with Pesto
It was amazing!  Highly recommend it!

Hope your week is full of nice little surprises along the way as well!

All the best
Lisa
