New Pattern Launch -- Connected Squares

Friday, February 22, 2019

Yay!  Super excited to announce the second quilt in my mid-century modern quilt line—Connected Squares—has launched!

You can purchase it HERE !!!

Important to note:  Connected Squares is written specifically for beginning or novice quilters with lots of TIPs and detailed instructions for a PLAYMAT, THROW AND QUEEN size quilt.  PLUS instructions on how to easily make the scrappy versions.  If you're new to quilting and looking for your next step beyond patchwork, this is a great beginner quilt with NO seams to match.  That also means it is a versatile and quick pull together for the more experienced quilter!

My first and second quilts (blogged here) were both a version of "Plain Spoken" from the book The Modern Quilt Workshop.  Funny, when I look back at those first quilts and what attracted me to the design—simple lines and basic colors—I see I was leaning toward the mid-century modern aesthetic even back then!

It is often debated whether the Mid-century Modern style grew out of the German Bauhaus or Art Deco styles.  Whatever it's underpinnings, the style consists of a classic, understated look with clean lines and minimal fuss.

In its simplest form—Connected Squares meets the essential elements of mid-century modern.
  • —Minimal ornamentation
  • —Form follows function
  • —Uncluttered, sleek lines with both organic and geometric shapes
  • —Mixing different, and sometimes contrasting, materials
The inspiration for the pattern is the trellis often found in gardens and carports when I was growing up.

What I learned with this pattern is that even though it was designed on a simple, two-color palette, it comes to life in so many other ways.

And if I hadn't added enough variation with the scrappy versions, there were 7 quilt testers that were incredibly generous with their time, feedback and creativity and were great at truly showing the versatility and fun that can be had with this quilt.

The pattern can be found in my shop and I am offering 15% off of all of my patterns through the weekend (2.24.19).  (There are 3 now, but stay tuned, the list is growing!).

Thanks & have a great weekend!

All the best,

Connected Squares Pattern Launch

Friday, February 1, 2019

I am super excited to announce that I will be launching a new quilt pattern, Connected Squares, on February 22 !!!

Connected Squares is the second pattern in my line of mid-century modern quilt patterns, following the first, Geometric Patchwork, which launched in late November.

It's a  quilt I designed back in 2010 and gifted to my husband.  Based on a simple trellis design from the 50's and 60s– I have also seen it echoed in one of Jonathan Adler's throws.

There are some fabulous quilters out there that have been testing the quilt and I am currently finishing up incorporating their feedback into the pattern.  Fun fact:  This quilt has had testers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US ... talk about the power of the web in connecting people in a community!

Keep an eye here and on Instagram (@shinersview or #connectedsquares and #shinersviewpatterns) over the coming weeks to see some of the images of the Connected Squares quilt from the talented pattern testers.

The blog will be a little quieter over the next few weeks as we head off to New Zealand to visit my husbands family as well as spending some time touring an amazingly beautiful place!  I'll do a few posts, but expect more outdoor than indoor shots 😀 .  (Actually, that sounds a lot like my blog these days ;-).

All the best,
